Celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the University of Maribor

Throughout its history, the University has remained committed to fostering an environment of collaboration, global connectivity, and academic freedom—the foundations of outstanding achievements in education, research, and the arts. Looking to the future, it continues to create not only a space for sharing and enriching knowledge, but also a place of inspiration and opportunity for generations to come.

At the same time, the European University Initiative marks its 5th year of development. Over this period, the number of European university alliances has expanded to 65 with EU co-financing, alongside one with former co-financing and 13 more that submitted strong applications without financial support. These alliances, while making remarkable progress, have also faced numerous challenges. Key issues include the practical implementation of their objectives, differences in legal frameworks across the European Higher Education Area, and the need to develop innovative solutions to secure long-term competitiveness on a global scale.

Conference on European Universities

As the European Universities Initiative enters its next phase, it is vital to continue the debate on how to strengthen and expand its impact. A holistic approach is needed—one that recognises the university’s mission in education, research, and knowledge transfer at the European level. In this effort, European University Alliances should serve as frontrunners and co-creators, driving deeper integration of the European Higher Education and Research Areas.

Representatives of the EUNICE Alliance from Poznan University of Technology took part in the conference “Integration of Research, Teaching and Innovation in a European University Campus – Why, How and When” hosted by the University of Maribor and the ATHENA European University. The delegation included Rector Prof. Teofil Jesionowski, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation Prof. Mariusz Głąbowski, and EUNICE Secretary General Magdalena Sikorska.

The conference brought together representatives from European university alliances, policymakers, and higher education experts to reflect on the achievements and future direction of the European Universities Initiative. The programme featured keynote contributions from the European Commission, including a speech by Ms. Susanne Conze (DG EAC), and discussions on research within alliances, open science and competitiveness, and models for integrated European campuses. Sessions also explored organisational frameworks and innovative approaches to strengthening cooperation among universities. Alongside academic debate, the event provided opportunities for networking and celebrated the 50th anniversary of the University of Maribor with a solemn ceremony and reception at the National Theatre.
