results of a call for European University Alliances

The European Commission has selected 14 new European University Alliances under the Erasmus+ programme in the latest call for proposals for this type of funding. This brings the total number of alliances to 64, meeting the European University Strategy's target of at least 60 alliances by mid-2024. These 64 European University Alliances include more than 560 higher education institutions of all types in all regions of Europe.

European University Alliances connect a new generation of Europeans and enable them to study and work in different European countries, in different languages, and in various academic sectors and disciplines. Students can obtain a high academic degree by combining studies in several European countries, contributing to the international attractiveness and competitiveness of European higher education. The alliances also bring innovation to Europe's regions, enabling students to collaborate with academics, researchers, businesses, cities, authorities, and civil society organizations.

The 64 alliances cover 35 countries, including all EU Member States as well as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey. This autumn, 14 new European University Alliances will start their activities.

Currently, 23 higher education institutions from Poland participate in the European University Alliances. As of today, this list is supplemented by 9 universities joining the newly established initiatives. The following universities should be mentioned here:

•    Medical University of Gdańsk (ACE2EU)
•    Bialystok University of Technology (Across)
•    University of Economics in Katowice (BAUHAUS4EU)
•    University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (CHALLENGE.EU)
•    West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin (EUNICoast)
•    Kozminski University (EUonAIR)
•    The Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology (EUonAIR)
•    Opole University of Technology (KreativEU)
•    University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów (SUNRISE)

Poznan University of Technology has been creating the EUNICE European University since 2020 while also being its leader. In 2023, the project received funding from the European Union for a further 4 years of its activities.

Along with the announcement of the results of the call for new European University Alliances, the results of the call for the so-called European University Community of Practice were also announced. This autumn, the FOR-EU4All project, which will support the transformation of European higher education initiated by the European Universities Initiative, will start its activities. The European Commission has allocated €1.8 million for this purpose, and EUNICE will be present as an associated partner (through EUNICE AISBL - the legal personality of the alliance).

FOR-EU4All will reflect the fruitful collaboration and extensive expertise that exists in the informal network of alliances, known as FOR-EU. It will bring together, formalize, and scale up the informal processes and structures that have naturally developed over the last four years and will focus on supporting effective administration, coordination, communication, and dissemination within the alliances of European Universities.
